So you want an escape from the city?
One Harvard University-based startup, called Getaway, is looking to help city dwellers realize that goal by giving them the opportunity to rent a tiny house in the middle of nowhere. The startup, run by Harvard MBA student Jon Staff and Harvard Law student Peter Davis, officially launched today.

Users can rent a 160-square-foot house for as little as $99 per night, Staff told me in an interview. So far, Staff said the startup has built one tiny house in the East Boston shipyard. That home — outfitted with wheels to make it as mobile as possible — was trucked by Staff to rural New Hampshire, where it’s now stationed (the startup leases land from local landowners).

Staff said Getaway will build at least three tiny homes in the short-term, but the hope is to build at least 12 over the next year and expand to other places around the country. The homes are all designed by Harvard students and have a composting toilet, solar electricity and propane heat — among other basics.
The idea for the startup came partly from the fact that Staff had eclectic living arrangements throughout his life.
“I kind of found myself living in strange places,” he said.

Staff was raised on a boat in northern Minnesota, lived in the basement of a yogurt shop he opened in Somerville and slept in a library while it was under construction.
Getaway has raised about $250,000 in seed funding from two private investors and California VC firm Tamarisc. And that’s probably all the money it’ll need, Staff said.
“The goal is to take over the world for sure,” said Staff. “We aim to go nationwide and eventually beyond.”
