The 2014 Mass. Holiday Shopping Season, by the Numbers

While Black Friday sales weren’t exactly awesome this year, it looks like shoppers are spending more this holiday season than in the past.

Deloitte and eBay each conducted a survey that aimed to find out just when, where, and how shoppers go about finding presents in 2014. While eBay’s survey covered the state of Massachusetts, Deloitte surveyed just Boston-area shoppers.

Here are some of the takeaways from the two surveys.

$687.70

What people in Massachusetts plan to spend on gifts. That’s 8 percent more than last holiday season.

40 percent

Massachusetts shoppers who say they are likely to buy something for themselves instead of the recipient they have in mind. Well, at least they’re self aware.

35 percent

Bostonians who will buy gifts from their tablets or smartphones while chilling out in bed. (Yes— the survey actually says “in bed.”)

17

The number of gifts the average Massachusetts shopper plans to buy. Gift recipients figure to do pretty well this year, as the average shopper plans to buy for nine people.

65 percent

Massachusetts workers who will play hooky to get that last minute shopping done.

60 percent

Bostonions who say they’d still shop at a store that had experienced a data breach.

21 percent

Bostonians who will holiday shop even after the Christmas festivities comes to an end. Nothing beats those after-holiday sales.

LEGO Minifigures

The top trending gift on eBay in Massachusetts right now. The videogames Call of Duty and Super Smash Bros. are also hot items this year. That’s compared to Nebraska, where the No. 1 spot goes (of course) to a tractor.
