Boston, if you haven’t heard, was selected by the United States Olympic Committee as its representative to bid to host the 2024 Summer Games.
While the bid the Boston 2024 committee submitted to the USOC hasn’t been released, the group has spoken a little bit about what may go where if Boston were to wind up the host, including:
- A temporary stadium at Widett Circle.
- An Olympic Village at UMass Boston.
- Beach volleyball on Boston Common.
- Equestrian events at Franklin Park.
- The use of a number of existing venues like TD Garden, Gillette Stadium, Harvard Stadium, and the many college venues across the city.
Boston doesn’t currently have an aquatics center, but there has been talk of building one on college land should the bid become a reality. A velodrome would also be needed.
Boston 2024 has said these plans are a starting point—something of a first draft as plans develop and the bid moves on to the international stage.
On Friday, the day after the USOC made its pick, Boston 2024 released a few renderings showing what the Games could look like in Boston, sort of. The images do not depict specific locations, according to a Boston 2024 spokesperson, but concepts for how certain venues may appear. They are, at the very least, something to look at.
Here’s an illustration of an Olympic Boulevard at the center of the Games:
The International Plaza of an Olympic Village (this actually looks like it could be somewhere near UMass Boston, judging by the background):
