The results of Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s investigation into daily fantasy sports are imminent.
Healey has been conducting an investigation of daily fantasy sports for weeks, and her office is expected to present the findings soon, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
The news comes in the wake of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s declaration Tuesday that online daily fantasy sports websites Boston-basedDraftKings and New York competitor FanDuel constitute illegal gambling.
After Schneiderman’s decision, Massachusetts Attorney General spokeswomanCyndi Roy Gonzalez released the following statement:
“As the AG has said, she believes strongly that there must be a strong legal and regulatory framework in place for this new industry. We are conducting an examination and investigation of daily fantasy sports (DFSs) and will present our findings which will include strong consumer protections. Our focus remains on protecting consumers, protecting minors, and addressing problem gambling.”
DraftKings, a daily fantasy sports website, isn’t backing down. The company continues to maintain that its business is legal, and is challenging New York’s decision in a court of law, working with international and local law firms to mount a case.
“We intend to pursue this fight to the fullest to ensure that hundreds of thousands of New York fantasy sports fans can continue to play the games they love,” said Benjamin Spicehandler, a spokesman for DraftKings, in an email.
