It was during my second week of podcasting when I quickly logged into iTunes to check my podcast ranking and reviews. I noticed I was in the top 20 podcasts, and this feeling of elation absolutely roared through my entire body. I barely could control myself; I was soaring!

Three seconds later, that personal ecstasy was brutally shot down. I felt utterly dead as I read a comment by an unknown iTunes user. He blasted my entire game with five lines full of derogatory comments. From my opening to my ending, he had nothing but extremely negative opinions. I felt devastated.

The fact that I had 120-plus excellent reviews written by other users — and I was in the top 20 —didn’t even matter to me. This one comment shot directly at my heart. That night, I could not sleep; I was in agony. His horrible comments about my work just kept screaming through my mind and repeating just like an old broken record. I questioned myself, and my dream; I’ll never forget that night.

That incident happened more than 10 years ago, and I still remember that night. I had a mental fork in the road where I had to decide which way I was going to go. Was I going to let this one comment ruin me? I asked myself what truly was important to me, and opted to keep marching full steam ahead towards my dream.

Are you feeling frustrated because you can smell the success, but you just haven’t been able to see any of it? Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Greatness then, is not an act, but a habit.” Realize that you are the total sum of your habits. If bad habits are allowed to take over, they will dramatically cripple your road to success. The challenge lies in the fact that bad habits are incredibly sneaky and will creep up on you extremely slowly. These toxic habits begin to cause damage without you being aware of it until sometimes it becomes a major issue.

1. Weak self-discipline

Self-discipline is defined as the ability to make yourself do things that should be done. Often times, entrepreneurs become overwhelmed by all the tasks and details that are involved in your own business. When your mind is overloaded with tasks, we tend to let go the little things in the way of the big ones which will rain havoc on your business.

If you are constantly sidetracked or find yourself spending half a day licking envelopes when there are really more pressing matters, then it is time to re-do your list of goals and priorities — immediately.

Write out a list of what you want to accomplish over the next week, month, quarter, and/or year. Set your priorities and define the steps needed to achieve those goals. Train yourself to spend 80 percent of your time on these tasks alone. Hire out the lower-valued activities in order to free yourself to focus on the higher tasks that will help you achieve your goals.

To stay inspired and motivated, each day write down what you have achieved. I have my clients write down their three daily wins in a journal. This way, at the end of the week, you can go back and review. This is also an excellent tool for your year-end review as well.

2. Self-defeating beliefs

Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” This is so true. First, become aware of your self talk. Go an entire week and any time you catch negative self-talk just note it to yourself.

How often do you catch yourself saying, “I can’t do it,” or “It’s too risky to try?” Once you become aware of what negative self-talk is going on in your mind, you can begin to change mindset to an “I can” attitude. Successful people stay focused on their goals and set systems in place to achieve them.

A great exercise is to picture yourself being successful. Take a weekend and create a vision board of what success looks like for you. Replace the negative self-talk with positive thoughts. Believe you can achieve whatever it is you are going after, drop your fears and take the necessary steps to ensure that success.

3. Stop worrying about what other people think of you

Keep this LeCrae quote in the forefront of your mind always: “If you live for people’s acceptance you will die from their rejection.” Regardless of what people think of you at any point in time, one thing is undeniably certain: you are never as bad or good as they say you are.

If you find yourself having knee-jerk reactions to what others think of you, then it is high time you begin taking other people’s opinions with a grain of salt. When you know what truly matters to you in life then what other people think of you becomes significantly of less importance.

By knowing your values, you’ll have something to stand up for; something you truly believe in. Start standing up for what you believe in — causes, opinions, anything. You’re going to have people that disagree with you anyways, so why not express how you truly feel? No matter what people think about you, your self-worth comes only from within.

4. Let go of being a perfectionist

I will tell you right now, perfectionism is most likely your largest dream killer. If perfection is always your utmost goal, then you will be consistently left with an unrelenting sense of personal failure. When you spend too much of your time in regret, then you completely neglect to see what you were able to achieve, much less relish in your victory!

Wouldn’t you rather feel victorious instead of like a failure? Drop the perfectionist mindset, and always remember this: done is better than perfect.

Focus on strengthening your mental muscles. Start to make things happen for you, and make your personal evolution a top priority. By implementing these tips, you will prime yourself for victory, and I promise it will come to you.
