Arbella Insurance Group’s President and CEO John Donohue has been chosen to receive the 2014 Lewis Family Foundation CEO Social Leadership Award as part of the Boston Business Journal’s annual Corporate Citizenship Summit. The award, which is funded by the Lewis Family Foundation, recognizes exceptional civic leadership by executives in the Boston business community.

Donohue spearheaded the creation and funding of the Arbella Insurance Group Charitable Foundation in 2005, and the foundation now gives about $2 million per year to various charities. Hunger has been a major target for Donohue and Arbella, as some 500 agents participated in this year’s Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger, raising over $45,000 and the foundation contributed another $50,000, bringing Arbella’s total contribution, both from agents and the foundation, to over $700,000. Arbella’s is also the major sponsor of the Project Bread’s Chefs in Schools program, helping to lead a broad transformation of school food in Massachusetts.

Donohue will be honored Sept. 10 at the BBJ’s annual Corporate Citizenship Summit, which will be held Sept. 10 at the Westin Copley Place (click here to register). The award comes with a $25,000 grant to be used for charitable purposes at the CEO’s discretion.

“John has galvanized Arbella as a company with a social conscious,” said Gale Murray, publisher of the BBJ. “He exemplifies how leadership can direct positive energy out into the community and help bring change.”

The event also honors exceptional connections between businesses and nonprofits in the region, in its Partners of the Year program, which is sponsored byCitizens Bank. The year’s Partners of the Year are:

  • Third Sector Capital and Ropes & Gray
  • Boston Health Care for the Homeless and Hill Holliday
  • More than Words Bookstore & Cafe and Constant Contact
  • Teach for America and Biogen Idec
  • The Discovery Museums and MathWorks
  • City Year and Bain Capital

Earlier this month the BBJ released a list of the region’s top corporate charitable contributors — 73 companies that gave at least $100,000 to local nonprofits in 2013. The companies will be honored at the Business Journal’s annual Corporate Citizenship Summit Sept. 10 at the Westin Copley Place hotel.

“Even in a region with a long history of corporate generosity, these companies stand out,” said Murray “The Boston Business Journal is honored to highlight their contributions and provide a forum to discuss this important facet of our civic life.”

In addition to honoring top local corporate benefactors, and Partner of the Year, the Corporate Citizenship Summit presents an annual CEO Social Leadership Award to a regional executive who has shown model ability to lead his or her company to constant and tenacious activity in the community service field. That announcement will be made later this week.
