As the family feud at Market Basket continues to spill into the aisles of its 71 locations, at least one competitor is trying extra hard to pick up the leftovers.
Quincy-based Stop & Shop is pulling out all the stops. Well, at least that was the experience of my wife and youngest son at the Chelmsford location yesterday. As she described it to me later, corporate types dressed to the nines greeted them as they entered the jam-packed market, and scores of employees practically escorted them through the aisles assisting them with finding items in an unfamiliar venue.
We live in a town with three Market Baskets and no other choices. Getting a piece of fruit in our town now is like searching for gasoline in “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.”
The fruits and vegetables at Stop & Shop were colorful and bountiful. The folks behind the deli counter asked twice if the turkey was sliced thin enough. Meanwhile, my son had his fill of meats and cheeses being passed about to grateful customers.
Once through the checkout line, my wife realized she wasn’t in Kansas anymore, as the bill was quite a bit more than what we’re accustomed to seeing. Just as they were leaving, however, a manager handed my wife a couple of Stop & Shop discount cards for our next visit.
Competition. It’s a good thing.
