Experts are the “in” crowd. I know that many professionals are trying to get ahead, climb the corporate ladder, get promoted, get a raise, and stand out from the pack. It’s what drives corporate America!
But most professionals go about it the wrong way.
Some people think playing politics will do it, manipulation will do it, that shortcuts or a lack of integrity is what will do it. I will just lie my way to the top.
As I watch this corporate saga unfold with my popcorn, I have a little advice I want to offer you, which is way better and will allow you to sleep well at night. I want to step into your movie before it drags on too long.
Have you ever considered becoming an expert in your industry?
Becoming an expert
I know business can get down and dirty sometimes. Companies are downsizing and outsourcing, doing whatever they can to do more with less, which could one day mean getting rid of you.
You are worried about your future, you are worried about your family’s future too. You are willing to do what you need to do to survive. Have you considered becoming an expert?
Becoming an expert is the only way you can protect yourself and position yourself for tremendous opportunities and a tremendous future. However, becoming and expert requires a commitment, and it does take time.
It seems to me that the tremendous benefits of becoming the premiere expert in your industry are well worth it. Let’s think about the benefits:
- Experts are always in demand
- Experts are paid well
- Experts are admired and respected by their peers
- Experts are industry leaders and set trends
When you’re labeled as an expert, you shoot instantly to the top of the food chain. I mean, we have experts at the local level, state level, regional level and, of course, the global level. My encouragement for anyone who desires to break out of the pack and secure a bright future: Please consider becoming an expert.
We need you! All industries thrive on the experts taking everything inside the industry to the next level. You get to choose the area of your expertise. I suggest it is one that brings you passion and gives you energy.
The best news of everything I shared today is you are totally in control; nobody can stop you from becoming an expert. You stare at the person in the mirror every morning before you go to work, you take a peek before you go to bed.
You may have never considered this before, but if you look around, there are professionals everywhere, but very few experts. These experts seem to live pretty well with very little stress, because when you are the expert, the world revolves around you.
The 10,000-hours rule
All it requires from you is a commitment to log the hours it takes to become one. We have all heard the 10,000-hour rule; if you do anything for 10,000 hours or more, you are an expert.
I think that is an incomplete and vague statement. I think if anyone does what they do for 10,000 hours with passion, fully engaged, eager to learn and with the desire to become the best for 10,000 hours, they can become an expert.
You see, an expert has read everything they can get their hands on concerning their industry, an expert knows what everyone is doing and what works and doesn’t work.
An expert has failed so many times they’ve learned from their mistakes and everyone else’s mistakes around them. An expert knows all the players in their industry and the other experts that share that same space of excellence, and can share ideas and predict where the industry is headed.
You see, experts know what does or doesn’t work, so it propels them to the possibilities of what can. Pick your lane, put your time in and enjoy the benefits of becoming an expert. I still have some popcorn left, go out and finish your movie. I’ll be watching!
