Massachusetts lost jobs in August, but here are some companies that are hiring

Massachusetts lost 5,300 jobs in August, pushing the unemployment rate up 0.2 percentage points to 5.8 percent, the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported today.

By sector, the state reported:

  • Education and Health Services gained 1,600 jobs, up 0.2 percent over the month.
  • Leisure and Hospitality added 1,600 jobs, up 0.5 percent over the months.
  • Professional, Scientific and Business Services added 1,100 jobs, up 0.2 percent.
  • Information added 800 jobs, up 0.9 percent.
  • Government added 1,500 jobs, up 0.3 percent over the month.
  • Financial Activities added 100 jobs, essentially flat.
  • Trade, Transportation and Utilities lost 10,600 jobs, a decline of 1.9 percent.
  • Construction lost 700 jobs, a decline of 0.6 percent.
  • Manufacturing lost 700 jobs, down 0.3 percent.
